Getting the proportions right
Ovals read best when the two dimensions are clearly different — a 31 by 17 is obviously an oval, whereas 21 by 19 just looks like a slightly wonky circle. For running tracks and arenas, roughly 2:1 is the classic ratio. For ship hulls, start nearer 4:1 and adjust.
