How to link Nether portals correctly
Type where your Overworld portal stands and the calculator shows the Nether position that pairs with it — X and Z divided by 8, with the exact build spot rounded the way the game grid works. Go into the Nether, walk to that spot, and build your second portal there. A pair built at matching converted coordinates links cleanly in both directions.
The most common cause of a “stolen” portal — stepping through and arriving at the wrong one — is two Overworld portals whose converted Nether positions sit close together. Because of the 8:1 squeeze, Overworld bases even a few hundred blocks apart land near each other in the Nether. If that happens, build each Nether-side portal at its own exact converted spot rather than letting the game generate one.
Nether travel is an 8x highway
One block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld, which is why long-distance bases are connected through Nether tunnels. Use the trip box above: a 4,000-block journey shrinks to 500 blocks of ice road. Bring fire resistance, and light the tunnel to keep it spawn-proof.
FAQ
How do Nether portal coordinates work?
The Nether is compressed 8 to 1 on the horizontal axes. Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 to get the matching Nether position, or multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go the other way. Y is not scaled between dimensions.
Why does my portal come out somewhere else?
When you travel, the game looks for an existing portal near the converted coordinates. If your portals are not aligned, it can link to a different portal or create a new one. Build the second portal at the exact converted X and Z this calculator gives you and the pair will link reliably.
Does Y level matter for portal linking?
Far less than X and Z. Coordinates are not divided on the Y axis, and matching X and Z is what keeps a pair linked. Placing both portals at a similar height is still good practice and makes travel less disorienting.
How much travel does the Nether save?
Every block you walk in the Nether covers 8 blocks in the Overworld, so a 1,000-block Overworld trip is only 125 blocks of Nether travel. Type a distance into the travel box above to see the exact saving.
